FAQ 1428
How many hours a week can I work as an international student?

During term time, you are restricted to work the number of hours per week that is written on your visa decision letter, usually up to 20 hours per week. You must not go over 20 hours in any week in term time. (e.g. you must not work 19 hours one week and 22 hours the next.) You cannot be self-employed or work as an entertainer or professional sports person.

During your officially confirmed vacations and your work placement that is part of your course, you can work full time, unless your visa says otherwise. If you are uncertain when your official vacation dates are, you can check with your Programme Support Officer or request a confirmation of term dates letter that will contain this information.

The whole duration of a work placement is considered to be ‘term time’ therefore on top of the placement, you would also be allowed to work an additional 20 hours a week.

You can also work full-time after you have completed your course, for up to 4 months, or until the expiry date of your visa, whichever is sooner.

Please read the working during your studies page for more information. Further details can be found on the www.gov.uk website and the UKISA student work page.
